John has had a lifelong interest in popular music ever since playing in various bands while still at school.

In the 1980s, while working in advertising and PR, he wrote an illustrated newspaper feature, "The Illustrated Story of The Beatles" which ran in The Star and Beeld for two years and was also syndicated to newspapers around the world. In 1991 it was published as a successful book in a joint promotion with Radio 5 and the CNA.

Since then he has been compiling a day-by-day record of the history of pop and rock music and it is this extensive database that provides the basis for the programme "This Week in Rock" which he writes and which is presented each week by his friend and one-time partner in an advertising agency, Andy Rice.

"It's unlike any programme I've ever heard anywhere in the world," he says, "and although the content is dictated by what happened each week in the history of popular music, I try to fill it with as much interesting information and relevant music as possible."
